Privacy
Short version: Cave Racer has no accounts and sets no cookies. We count visits and races anonymously to see how the game is doing. Your Grand Prix, your settings and the classes you've unlocked stay in your own browser.
What the game keeps, on your device
So the game remembers you between visits, it saves these in your browser's local storage:
- Your Grand Prix in progress: which race you're on and the points so far
- The speed classes you've unlocked
- Your settings: sound and music levels, camera, graphics and screen shake
The classic side-on game at /classic.html also keeps your best time on each course, your ship, and the pilot name you type, if you type one, plus a random id for this browser so its records board can tell your runs apart (it isn't linked to you).
Clearing your browser's data for this site removes all of it, and Settings, Reset progress clears your Grand Prix and classes.
Anonymous visit counting
We use Umami, run on our own server, to count visits: the page, the website that sent you, your country, and your browser, operating system and kind of device. The game also counts when someone opens the title, starts a race and finishes one, with the track, the class and your place, and when someone installs the app. Umami sets no cookies and doesn't keep your IP address; it can't tell who you are, and nothing is shared with advertisers or anyone else.
The classic game's records board
When you finish a race in the classic game, the game sends the board your time, your pilot name (or "Pilot" and a number if you haven't set one), the random id above, and your route through the course, so the record holder's run can be shown to other players as a ghost. The board keeps your address only as a scrambled code (a salted hash) to stop abuse, never the address itself. Only the record run's route is kept; the others are discarded. Ask us and we'll remove your runs.
Hosting
The site is served through Cloudflare, which, like any web host, handles the network request your browser makes to load it. Like any web server, ours keeps standard request logs (address, page and time) for a short while to keep the site running and secure. They aren't used to track you or shared with anyone.
